What causes pre-surgery anxiety?

It is logical to feel fear before undergoing a surgical procedure. In fact, there is a scientific term for fear of surgery - tomophobia. Tomophobia, by definition, is the fear of surgical procedures or medical intervention. There are many reasons why you may feel nervous about having surgery but once you are able to understand where your fear stems from it will be easier to address them in a more constructive way.

  • Loss of control

  • Unusual environment

  • Undergoing anesthesia

  • Pain

  • Recovery process

  • Surgical results

Preoperative anxiety is common. In fact, research from Samara State University, published in BioMed Central, found that out of almost 300 surveyed patients, a wide majority — about 70 percent — experienced some level of anxiety before their procedures.

Abby, a nurse working on our pre-operative floor had this to say about some measures we take to ensure patients feel secure before going into surgery, “Many patients fear the unknown of surgery so part of my job is to inform them of the procedure. Creating and maintaining open communication between our doctors, nurses, and patients really gives our patients peace of mind.”

While the feeling of fear is common, the good news is surgical anxiety is temporary.
